What is a spelling test template?

A printable spelling test is a simple evaluation of a student’s ability to correctly spell words. These tests are commonly given in schools during language or reading classes to find out whether each student has successfully learned the spelling words you’ve taught. You can conduct these tests on intervals throughout academic the school year.

Types of spelling tests

There are various types of spelling test templates you can create, that each focus on different skills:

  • Oral spelling tests
This is a test where you would give students a word to spell orally. This is best illustrated in spelling bee competitions where students must spell each word on a stage. This type of test can put some pressure on the speller, especially for timed competitions.
  • Aural spelling tests
For this type of primary or kindergarten spelling test, the students would listen to words you would say, which they would spell on paper. Typically, there’s a list of words that you assign the students to spell. But there are also instances where they would spell words from a dictation passage that may include punctuations and sentences.
  • Proofreading spelling tests
In this exercise, you would give students a written text that contains mistakes in spelling. The students will correct the spelling mistakes as they read the text. Proofreading is a great way to train students with language in context. The exercise focuses more on reading ability, not spelling techniques directly.
  • Multiple choice spelling tests
Here, you give your students several spelling options for each word presented. Then they have to select the right spelling. This type is usually based on a reading text and it helps students check their knowledge on homophones. On some occasions, students would choose the correct spelling for two words that have the same pronunciation but have different spellings and meanings.

Why do you need a spelling test template?

Spelling words correctly is a very useful skill that students need to master as this lays a basic foundation they will need throughout their educational life. A mastery of spelling proves very important in many basic skills which include reading and writing. Such skills support students to achieve good results as they progress through the different grades. Needless to say, good spelling skills can have an effect on the students’ future careers.

How to review for a spelling test?

Creating a spelling test template or spelling test worksheet can be a challenge. For students, the keys to prepare for a spelling test are both practice and memorization. Help students familiarize themselves with the words by spelling and using them correctly.

They should know how to spell the words, how to pronounce them, and how to write them down. Fortunately, there are some methods you can teach your students to help them study word lists better. Here are some tips for you to help your students review for the spelling test template 20 words, spelling test template 10 words or any other spelling test template you create for them:

Use the basic study tips

  • Practice regularly
This is the simplest and best way to prepare for a printable spelling test – by regular practice. Obviously, if students aren’t spelling or using the words they learn, they would forget how they’re spelled. But if they study and use the spelling words regularly, it will be much easier for them to recall.
  • Don’t study too many words at one time
Usually for spelling tests, you might give a long list of spelling words to memorize and study. Your students shouldn’t try studying them all at once as this will be very difficult. Instead, they should concentrate on fewer words at a time. Break up the list into small groups. This makes the words easier to remember and manage.
  • Say the words out loud
Students will find this helpful because saying them loud gives them sounds to associate with words’ spellings. When practicing, say the words, the letters, and the sounds.
  • Use the spelling words frequently
It’s also as helpful to use the words in daily writing and speaking. Ask your students to construct sentences with the words on your spelling test worksheet or use them in conversations. The more exposure they have, the more they will remember the words when taking the test.

Write the spelling words down

  • Write the words on 3 different sheets of paper
For this, your students need 3 sheets of paper. They will use the first one to list the words to study. They will use the second one to copy the spelling words. Then they will use the third one to write down the words from memory.
  • Trace the words
This is great for a kindergarten spelling test. Apart from the template, prepare tracing paper. Ask your students to start tracing the words on the list. Don’t rush them. Allow your students to take their time to trace the letters carefully while saying them out loud after successfully tracing each word.
  • After tracing the words, copy them
Once your students have successfully traced the words from your spelling test template, ask them to copy the words down on a separate sheet of paper. You may allow your students to look at the words on their tracing sheet or write them down from memory. Again, ask them to say the words out loud before moving on to the next ones. You can also ask them to say the letters of the words as they write them down.

Using more innovative review techniques

  • Make flashcards
While making your printable spelling test, make flashcards to go along with it. Flashcards can improve study sessions. Make the cards with the spelling words on each of them. The flashcard should have the spelling words on one side and a blank space on the other. Use flashcards in different ways so your students can learn more effectively.
  • Allow your students to review your spelling test worksheet in groups
Studying alone is fine but studying with friends can be very effective too. Doing so helps all the students improve their spelling skills as they work together to learn the proper spelling of the words on your spelling test template. Furthermore, studying with friends makes word learning more fun.
  • Use mnemonics
These refer to mental associations that students can use to remember things better. Basic mnemonic methods can help them learn the correct spellings of the words you give them.
  • Teach word origins to make them more interesting
The words in the English language don’t all have English origins. Many words came from other languages. Because of this, many English words are a challenge to spell. But knowing the language of origin of words can give your students hints to help them remember how to spell them.
  • Give reverse chaining a try
This is another effective way to help your students study spelling. First, choose a word to study, have the students say it out loud, then let them write the word down. As they write down the word, ask them to say each letter out loud. This helps improve familiarity with the word’s spelling.
Of course, you have to make sure that your students have spelled the word correctly before they move on to the next word. Here are some specific steps to guide you for this activity:
    First, write the word down.
Write the word again, less 1 letter.
Move down a couple of lines on the paper and write down the word once again. It should be the whole word, then say it out loud before writing it down. Say each letter out loud as well. For this step, your students won’t write the last letter but they will still say the letter out loud.
Continue moving down to the next line writing one letter less each time. Your students should still say the whole word and each of the letters out loud even if they aren’t spelling the whole word. Continue eliminating letters until your students are only left with the first letter of the word.
Now, ask your students to rebuild the original word. Have them fold the paper in half to hide the correct spelling.
Start rebuilding the word by saying the entire word and each of the letters out loud. Write only the first and last letters of the word.
Now, move to a different part of the paper. Say the word again, spell it out loud, and add the final two letters.
Continue until they have spelled the word again completely.
